Apply nowI started working with Arjun the summer before senior year, convinced my essay was finished because my English teacher had given it a 98. He told me, kindly, that nothing in it could only be about me. We cut the first two paragraphs and rebuilt it around my grandmother's weekly pill organizer, which I never would have considered essay material. He also caught that McCombs BHP requires a separate application with its own essay, two weeks before the deadline. I was admitted to BHP.
Arjun helped me understand that getting into a school and getting into its computer science program are two separate problems. We built my list around that, and I was admitted to Grainger for CS.
Our son was automatically admitted to UT on class rank, and we assumed the hard part was over. Arjun explained that automatic admission does not guarantee a major, and that engineering reviews essays separately. We spent the fall on those essays. He was admitted to Electrical and Computer Engineering, while a classmate with the same rank and a higher SAT was placed in undeclared.
I applied to eighteen schools, and every supplement felt like a new test. Arjun's rule was that every 'Why Us' essay has to name something you can only find at that school: a specific course, lab, or professor, not the location or the ranking. He marked sentences that 'could be any school' until I learned to catch them myself. I was admitted to Northwestern and Plan II, neither of which I thought was realistic.
Arjun had me rewrite my Why Rice essay three times, and the third version is the one that worked. I was admitted Early Decision. I am so grateful for how much time he put into it.
I was not excited about this at first. My parents signed me up after my PSAT. In our first session Arjun asked what I do outside school, and when I mentioned that I repair and resell old laptops, he said it was more compelling than anything on my activities list. That became my main essay. I also finished with a 1510, which I did not expect. If you are unsure about it, it is worth giving a real try.
I received UT Dallas's Academic Excellence Scholarship, which covers nearly all of my costs. Arjun helped me write the scholarship essay the same week it was due.
I came to Arjun nine days before the UT deadline without an essay started. He stayed calm, which helped me stay calm, and I submitted a day early.
A friend who was admitted to Rice recommended Arjun. My score went from 1210 to 1420 in about three months.
Arjun was honest with us from the very first call. He told us Stanford was not a realistic target for our daughter and suggested we focus on Vanderbilt and Rice instead. She is now at Vanderbilt and very happy there.
I was admitted to Cornell Engineering through Early Decision. Arjun was patient through every draft, including the ones I sent late at night, and his feedback was always specific about what to change.
What do the T20 colleges actually want?
Every top college publishes exactly how much each part of an application counts, in a public document called the Common Data Set. Here is what they report.

The Manda Method™
Everyone offers to help with the essay. Almost none of them have read an application the way an admissions officer reads one.
English teachers grade writing. An admissions essay is not that. It is evidence about a person, read in four minutes, next to forty others. An essay can earn an A in English and do nothing in an admissions file.
Counselors reach for the safe template. Safe is what the other four hundred essays are already doing.
AI writes the average of every essay ever written. That is how the tool works, and the average essay is exactly the one that gets passed over.

College consulting questions
Do you write the essays?
No. I ask questions, push back on anything vague, and edit for structure. Admissions officers read thousands of these and can tell. A ghostwritten essay is not something you want attached to your kid's name.
Is this not what our English teacher does?
English teachers grade writing. Admissions readers are not grading writing, they are deciding whether they want the person. Those are two different jobs, and the second one is not taught anywhere.
When is it too late to start?
Senior fall still works, but it narrows what we can change. Junior spring is when everything is still on the table. The summer before senior year is when the essays should actually get written.
Why does the program matter more than the school?
Because the program is the real gate. McCombs, Grainger and most computer science programs admit far fewer students than their universities do, and they read the application differently. A list built on the university's admit rate will tell you a school is safe when the program is a reach.
What if my kid does not know what they want to study?
That is normal, and it is workable. It shifts the list toward schools where switching majors later is realistic, which is a real difference between otherwise similar universities.
